Perusing the latest pizza news stories I stumbled across one headline that caught my attention…an article from Today with the headline ‘Meet the man who has eaten pizza for every meal for 25 years.’ Not being able to help the mental image that popped into my head, I just had to check out the story…hoping for a picture of said man. I was surprised; this man was not at all what I expected.
Dan Jannsen decided when he was 14 years old that he would become a vegetarian for ethical reasons. The only problem was he didn’t like vegetables…he liked pizza. So, he began eating pizza and thus began a 25-year routine which is still going strong.
Mr Jannsen, now 38, drinks coffee for breakfast and then consumes an entire cheese pizza for lunch and another for dinner. He changes it up a bit by eating frozen pizza, pizza from different pizzerias and sometimes making it himself.
"I understand that this is a disgusting diet,'' he said. ”You expect me to be overweight and have no energy, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol…” Um, yeah, and for some reason I picture acne and grease...a lot of it…but I admit I am wrong.
According to Dan, when he tells folks about his unusual diet they often react one of two ways, "They either want to kill me, or they think I'm a hero,'' he told TODAY.com
Jannsen does admit "Once a week to be healthy, I'll eat a bowl of Raisin Bran, but other than that it's just pizza." …well that’s a relief. He goes on to say "I'm sure when I'm 60 I'll drop dead of a heart attack, but right now I am fine." Did I mention this guy is already a diabetic?
Jannsen is currently engaged; his fiancé is slowly trying to get him to change the way he eats. He has seen a therapist about his eating habits so apparently he accepts the fact that his diet may be a concern…but he says right now he is perfectly happy with it.
