For many who are not familiar with the #metoo movement, it is overall a fight against sexual harassment, rape, and any form of harassment that happens in the workplace. It is a huge movement that has been making waves in so many different industries, the movie world 'Hollywood,' to the restaurant industry that involve, chefs all the way to hosts/hostesses. This new movement that has taken off in just recent news is the new defense movement that can overall protect people from unwanted speech and treatment in the workplace. Let's talk about the restaurant industry and how this #metoo movement is pushing for more security in the workplace.
The first point for many restaurants is when the staff complain about tipping. There is such a form of harassment when it comes to tipping. For instance, unwelcomed flirting accompanied by physical touching at times when giving a tip to either the server or the host/hostess unfortunately does happen enough that it is alarming overall. Such behavior can be found quite often for the bartenders during drink specials or event nights. How the #metoo movement is pushing for better is that signs like these where it is great reminder that you have the power to report when you are harassed and feeling uncomfortable. It is to give those who are found as victims of harassment to feel confident knowing that they can turn to a trusted organization or management that will handle their situation promptly and with care rather than ignoring or allowing the issue to continue.
As an experienced server and host/hostess myself, I can say that over the years we unfortunately do get used to having to ignore when we get harassed and only report the issue ONLY when it gets worst, but with the #metoo movement it is teaching those who do get harassed to immediately take action against it. In the long run, I believe this will be an overall benefit for everyone working in the service industry as it allows victims to feel empowered to raise their voice against those who make them feel uncomfortable in the workplace due to harassment.
