In recent news, an NC Rocky Mount Pizza Inn got into major trouble with quite a lot of people for having been accused of being racist to an African-American man who presented a coupon to them to enjoy a buffet, but they refused to take it based on the coupon not having the 'proper signature' of the manager of that Pizza Inn location. Based on the story as stated by NewsObserver.com's post, the African-American man, Link Alexander, felt that his coupon should have been valid for ALL participating Pizza Inn locations as stated on the coupon. It did not at all say that a coupon is only good for one location to whose signature was on that coupon. That may have been a ridiculous way of doing it and opposite of text on the printed coupon. Furthermore, Alexander was disturbed by his experience, shared his experience with his friend who is Caucasian and he decided to give that same coupon a go. When he arrived, the front desk did not hesitate on taking that exact coupon. He even went as far as getting his coupon seen by the assistant manager, of course covering up the signature and he said that his coupon is valid. When his friend, Casey, uncovered the signature and the assistant manager realized it was the same coupon, he then said that the coupon is not valid due to the signature not being recognizable as one of their own. Talk about trying to cover up the tracks!
If at one point when the coupon was shown by either Alexander or Casey, they could have immediately said they are not one of the participating locations for that coupon. Unfortunately, based on their behavior, them saying they will take the coupon only when a 'white' man presented it, then turning the story around saying the signature isn't right when clearly it says ALL participating locations it is valid, made them look truly ridiculous.
Furthermore, the two men took their experience to social media and it went viral with people supporting Alexander and Casey in their fight to bring awareness that racism is still experienced.
Granted, there are many people out there unfortunately who use racism as an excuse in the book to use even in the situations where racism had no part. As a public message, please STOP. You are NOT at all helping those who fight against racism. YOU are being part of the issue. CALL out racism when in fact it is based upon that with factual evidence. NOT because you are lazy, don't show up to work, then say you got fired because your manager was racist. < Just an example folks.
Thankfully, the Pizza Inn wanted to make things right and apologized for the behavior on behalf of the staff involved, but the harsh reality is that there are people out there in service positions that are racist. Hopefully, racism dies.
When will racism end? What are your thoughts on the issue of racism and what did you think of this particular case of racism?
