Restaurant Chain PizzaExpress in the UK is a one-of-a-kind restaurant chain. With 400 restaurants splashed across the country they have a very unique view on things, specifically aesthetics. A check of their About Us page explains clearly, “What floats our boat? Four simple things. Beautiful music. Stunning design. Unique experiences. Exceptional food. To us, these are special. Always have been. Always will. It's just who we are.” Yep, I love these folks!
From the beginning, in 1965, PizzaExpress was the start of something unique. Peter Boizot, in love with pizza and living in England where pizza could not be found, realized the need for a pizzeria. The first one opened on Wardour Street. Two years later, Peter met the amazing artist Enzo Apicella. The two shared a passion for beautiful music, stunning design, unique experiences and exceptional food. Promoting great art is part of what they do. Enzo poured his artistic talents into opening each and every location since. Each one is unique in design, often paying homage to its surroundings, often in significant public buildings (ex-courthouses, churches, etc) and each a mini-art-gallery in itself.
Decades later the pair is still at it. As part of their Love Your Summer event and to celebrate their love for design, last month PizzaExpress paid homage to world famous paintings by recreating them as pizzas. Popular works by Van Gogh, Monet and Munch have all been recreated as tasty pies as part of their Love Your Summer pizza collection. The collection, commissioned by PizzaExpress, is the work of celebrated food artist Prudence Staite. The work was quite impressive! These mouth-watering displays took upwards of 30 hours each to make, with about 20 peppers and 140 olives amongst ingredients used. Take a look at a few of them below.
